The Quadrado is one of Trancoso’s main tourist attractions, where you’ll find the São João Batista church, the large grassy field with colorful houses all around it and the viewpoint from where you can see the beautiful beach, the Trancoso river and beautiful cliffs.
Built in the 18th century by the Jesuits and with simple colonial architecture and a unique beauty, the charming white church is illuminated to attract visitors at night and stands out against the backdrop of the Quadrado.
The visitor has a unique and unforgettable experience, where the feeling is that this village has stood still in time. During the day, the Quadrado church in its simplicity welcomes visitors to learn a little more about its history inside, where it houses the images of St. John the Baptist, St. Benedict, St. Sebastian and St. Andrew.
Behind the church is the lookout point, with a breathtaking view of the beach, the meeting of the Trancoso River and the crystal-clear sea in various shades of blue and emerald green, as well as the beautiful cliffs. There you can buy a coconut water and sit for a while, feel the breeze coming from the sea and admire this unique view full of history, as this place is part of the Discovery Coast of Brazil. Pataxós Indians often walk around the site, bringing their handicrafts and culture to visitors.
Around the Quadrado lawn are the colorful little houses, most of which have kept their original architecture. There you’ll find cozy restaurants serving delicious local and international cuisine, as well as local decoration and art stores offering very special objects made from local raw materials and of unique beauty.
